Skip tracing cost comparison: what you actually pay

Headline prices are misleading. Here's what skip tracing actually costs once you account for misses, minimums, and accuracy.

You can't shop skip tracing on price alone. Three vendors with $0.05 headline prices can have wildly different effective costs because (a) some charge for misses and some don't, (b) minimums lock you into spend you don't use, and (c) accuracy differences mean some records cost you twice when you have to re-skip them later. This guide does the actual math.

The cost categories

TierVendorsHeadline priceReal price
CheapTracerfy, DataZapp$0.01–$0.03$0.02–$0.05 effective after misses + accuracy hit
Mid API-firstSkip Trace API$0.05 / match$0.05 (no minimums, no miss billing)
Investor GUIBatchData, Skip Genie, REISkip$0.07–$0.17$0.10–$0.22 effective with minimums and bundles
EnterpriseLexisNexis, TLO$0.50–$2.00$0.80–$3.00 effective with monthly minimums

Worked example: 5,000 records, monthly run

Same input list, four vendors:

Tracerfy at $0.02 per attempt, charges for misses, ~70% useful match rate: 5,000 × $0.02 = $100 for ~3,500 useful records. Effective cost per useful record: $0.029.

Skip Trace API at $0.05 per match, pay-per-match, ~75% match rate: 3,750 × $0.05 = $187 for 3,750 useful records. Effective cost per useful record: $0.05.

Skip Genie at $0.14 per record, charges per record returned, ~75% match rate: 3,750 × $0.14 = $525 for 3,750 useful records. Effective cost per useful record: $0.14.

BatchData on a starter plan with $99 minimum + $0.07 per record + ~75% match rate: $99 minimum + 3,750 × $0.07 = $361 for 3,750 useful records. Effective cost per useful record: $0.096.

Where the cheap option still wins

If you're optimizing cost per dial in a high-throughput cold call shop and you'll happily dial through dead numbers because your bottleneck is dial volume, Tracerfy's effective $0.029 still wins. That's a real use case for some buyers.

Where the cheap option loses

If your bottleneck is conversion per real contact (most investors, most collections shops, every PI), the $0.05 mid-tier is usually a better deal because the additional 5% in match rate and the absence of dead-number waste matter more than the headline price difference.

Hidden costs nobody talks about

  • Stranded credit packs. Buy 10,000 credits, use 7,000, lose 3,000 at year end. Effective cost goes up.
  • Minimum monthly fees. A $99 minimum means a slow month gives you a $0.40 effective per-record cost on a 250-record list.
  • Re-skipping costs. If you have to re-skip records that were stale on the first attempt, you double the cost on those records.
  • Integration time. Vendor lock-in costs you switching cost. The cheaper vendor might take 3x longer to integrate.

How we price and why

Skip Trace API charges $0.05 per successful match, no monthly minimum, no billing for misses, automatic volume tiers down to $0.03 at scale, and a reseller tier for white-label SaaS use. The pricing is designed to be predictable and to make us economically aligned with your accuracy. Full pricing here.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest skip tracing API?
On headline price, Tracerfy and DataZapp at $0.01–$0.03. On effective cost per useful match, the answer depends on your list and use case. Run a parallel test before committing.
Do all vendors charge for misses?
No. Pay-per-match billing (Skip Trace API and a few others) means you don't pay when no contact data is returned. Most cheap and mid-tier vendors charge per attempt regardless of result.
